Keir Starmer is facing rebellion from MPs after ministers scrapped intentions to give workers immediate safeguards against wrongful termination, a reversal violating the Labour manifesto.
MPs including an ex-government official who spearheaded the employment rights bill raised objections over the climbdown revealed by the administration.
Ministers have axed the plan to scrap the 24-month eligibility timeframe for workers to submit unfair firing complaints and permit them to act beginning day one in a new job, in an attempt to pass the legislation through parliament.
The legislation became trapped in a standoff between upper and lower chambers regarding the initial proposal to offer labor protections immediately, along with provisions to ban "exploitative" zero-hours contracts.
Ministers currently plan to establish the protection over unfair dismissal following half a year employment as an alternative, while other day-one rights to paternity leave and health-related payments remain scheduled to move forward, becoming active in the second quarter of 2026.
The elected official for the northeastern constituency labeled the action as a "complete betrayal" and pledged to advocate for its reversal.
"We are unable to endorse that partial approach."
"This is a wrong-headed move and I plan to fight to reverse this让步."
Another Labour MP voiced disappointment regarding insufficient discussion, stating: "There has been absence of dialogue with party members. Peers shouldn't override concerning campaign pledges, so why have we capitulated??"
Another representative commented: "Companies need not concern themselves regarding first-day entitlements, while employees have much to lose from businesses who resists first-day entitlements."
The former employment minister asserted that the decision "undoubtedly constitutes a pledge violation."
The learning department head stated there was a "very real prospect" the execution of the employment rights bill would have been delayed if the government had not made a change regarding immediate safeguards against unfair dismissal.
"Dialogue has taken place concerning the matter about wrongful termination and the time period among companies, labor organizations and the administration, and after those talks consensus has emerged regarding the path ahead, which is welcome."
She emphasized that "It means that the qualifying period will decrease from 730 days to 180 days, and this accompanies significant first-day entitlements around sick pay and around parental leave."
"However the danger present that if we didn't make progress, those significant entitlements wouldn't come into force from April next year."
Following inquiry concerning whether it represented a broken promise, the secretary answered: "In the manifesto, our commitment stated was that we planned to cooperate with labor organizations, with companies, with community groups, while discussing such entitlements we intended to implement."
"Therefore, two components exist regarding that matter, in the election platform, the crucial protections and the consultation."
