Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement say they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then located numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A senior representative said the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
