2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Follows Poor Feedback

The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.

Recently, the company's top executive a key figure notified team members about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had shown the necessity for a more defined game identity.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

The news mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire text from the president's communication:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”

With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our fans.

The belief in this project strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After several months of talks, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and leading some of the most well-known titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming Ben soon. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the evolution of the game in the weeks to follow.

David

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Face the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that shift every match. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your team can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."

The game lacks an announced release date or consoles, but players can expect further news as development advances.
